A Winter Quest in Norway
The Northern Lights Chase
The cold bit through my gloves as I stood on the edge of a fjord, my breath frosting in the Arctic air. I’d come to Norway for an adventure travel quest, chasing the northern lights on a budget travel mission—hostels, instant noodles, and a rented car with a broken heater. The sky was clear, the stars sharp, and I waited, my camera ready. Can patience outlast the cold? I wondered, stamping my feet to keep warm, the silence of the night pressing in.
I’d landed in Oslo, but the lights called me north to Tromsø, where the odds were better. I joined a small tour group, our guide a cheerful Norwegian named Lars who swore by his grandmother’s wool socks. We drove through snow-dusted forests, stopping at viewpoints, but the lights stayed hidden. One night, we set up camp by a frozen lake, the ice cracking softly, and Lars lit a fire. We roasted sausages and swapped stories, the cold forgotten in the warmth of new friends.
The lights came on the third night, a faint glow at first, then a burst of color—green, purple, dancing like spirits. I stood speechless, the beauty overwhelming, the cold a distant memory. Norway had tested me, but the reward was worth every shiver. On the drive back, I watched the lights fade, my heart full.
